Illustration is art that tells a story and is usually created in co-operation with a client. Before the 1800's this was true of most major art works. With the development of mass produced full color printing and photography, illustration was given less status even as high quality art became more accessible to the public. Today, business has replaced the church and royalty as patrons, but illustration remains a significant visual art form.
